Nikon D850 Noise

Okay, here is a 100% crop from your RAW file (from a D610, not a D850 for those just joining us).

I enhanced the saturation and there is some noise in the unfocused parts of the photos, but it seems very acceptable at this magnification. I don't think there is anything wrong with your camera. I had two D600 bodies and loved them. I upgraded for no good reason, just to get the latest greatest 46 mp.

ETA: I did not add any noise reduction.

Thanks for the big help!
Here is a link to my original files also raw
The application must have decreased the files size.

The candy table is fine (it could use just a tad of sharpening IMHO). The cake though is motion blurred. You used a shutter speed of 1/30s at f4 and even the out of focus light points show motion. There are things that don't work so good: Using your lens wide open and using a too slow shutter speed hand held. Yes VR can help, but to a certain extent only. To me, motion blur is way worse than grain or noise. Noise can be reduced, but motion blur never. I don't know which program you use to convert your raw files, but it's easy enough to add a tad of sharpening and remove a bit of noise that you should be able to get great results with your camera & lens combo.

And never forget what your intended output will be. Unless you plan to print very large (30x40) or something like, the noise you see on your computer screen at 100% view will almost be never noticeable on the actual print if viewed at a normal distance.

Enjoy your Nikon.

Thank blade for assuring the camera is ok :)
I understand better now what I did wrong.
Or misunderstood the the factors that affects noise. Many many thanks!

Have you ever tried the Photoshop filter that supposedly can undo slight motion blur? I've never had success with it.
No :) I usually work in lightroom most of the time. But I do know PS but less use it.
I must say on the cake pictures I couldn't find out where did you see motion blur :)
Or how to look for it.

By the way, the EXIF on your RAW files says you were using Spot metering, which will not be so accurate in these types of shots. It also says you were shooting manual, but if you were still using the light meter to adjust your settings you would have been better off with Matrix or Center-weighted...

You are right I forget to ask about it. Someone told me it less good to use spot metering but I discard it because I don't understand how it effects the image in manual mode.

Are you shooting pure manual mode? Then how do you know if your settings are correct if you are not looking at the light meter? Are you using auto-ISO? If you are using auto-ISO, then the camera uses your light metering mode to set the ISO, and spot metering will give different results depending on exactly where in the scene you place the spot.

Enjoy that D610, it is a great camera.

Yes I have, but it never did the job for me.

But the thing is sometimes we have a tendency to give sharpness way too much importance. The basics still stand though. Fast enough shutter speeds, lens closed a stop or two from it's max opening, steady camera holding technique and still subjects.

After reviewing my pics by nikon customer service I received the advice to sent my new D850 in to a Nikon service center. However Nikon now says the camera noise is within specifications but I find the noise even at ISO 640 to be more then one should expect. Could you pls
AABlhvuXyQLsHjuaKrTpP7q1a
