Recently queried Nikon about the country of origin of a given lens. Four exchanges later, they still have not given me an answer, falling back instead on their stock reply that it does not matter where a lens is made. It will still be made to their strict standards. Toward the end of these exchanges they got increasingly snippy with me about it and never did answer my question.

It might not matter to most people where an item is manufactured but it matters to me. I do not knowingly buy products made in the PRC. That is a strictly personal choice and I do not foist my reasons on others. I was still entitled to an answer.

In fact the fellow suggested to me that they do not know where a given lens is made, which of course is a load of bull. They had better be keeping track of where their products are made. It is just a good thing I am such a loyal Nikon user or I would have to look elsewhere for my lenses.

As it is I will probably just buy an older used Nikon lens to fulfill my need..:concern:

That is one thing that I have come to learn/observe/read about Canon vs Nikon. Canon support, at least for the pros, seems almost legendary. Nikon on the other hand often seems to be more in line with is there support?

Nikon customer support used to be legendary, years ago before PRC got involved and everything was made in Japan... Now its just a bunch of people, including supervisors to the nth level reading and emailing scripts. You can not get a straight answer from any of them.

I empathize with your frustration.

Appreciate not wanting to buy from PRC and I think it's quite legit for a number of reasons, but it's almost impossible not to these days.

They pretty much have us by the short hairs. :(

Ron FWIW, Nikon 50mm f1.8D/G, 35mm f1.8G DX, and 85mm f1.8G lenses are made in China. D7000, D610/D600, 24-120mm f4 are made in Thailand. There might be more consumer camera models that are made in Thailand but I am not sure.

Sadly, many consumer products are made in China. To my knowledge, Nikon Pro equipment are made in Japan. My 35/1.8G and 50/1.8D are made in China, and my 80-200/2.8, 50/1.2 and my Sigma 10-20 are made in Japan. D40, D40x and D90 I used to own were made in Thailand.

Like most, I have apprehensions when buying things from China. However, not all products that are made there are of low quality. Manufacturers move there because labor cost is low so they can maintain prices despite rising cost of materials. Finally, many products manufactured in other countries may have parts that are made in China.

What I am more wary of is the poor feedback many people have with Nikon customer service.

Sadly, but truly: even if the item is labeled as "made in Thailand" or "made in Japan" (engraved or printed) nobody can really guarantee that this is so (that it is not made in Greater China or Taiwan or wherever)...
