I was given this lens recently but don't know a whole lot about it except reading some bad reviews. Any how what I'm looking for is the owners manual for it. I have googled it like crazy and cant seem to find anything. So, thought I would ask if anyone around here has a pdf of it.

I have 3 other AF lenses but I am specifically want to find out about the function of the ring closest to the body mount.

The ring closest to the mount is the aperture ring... depending on the camera you have, you set it to the smallest F-stop (the largest number)... and the camera makes the adjustments internally automatically... In fact, if it's not set correctly, you should get an ERR message on the camera's LCD display...
That's what I thought. I have been trying it out on my D90 and as long as its set to 22 then everything is fine. As soon as I move it from there I get the f EE on the display. With the F5 its fine. So was just reading about what could be the problem with it.

There is no problem... set the ring to the F22... and use the aperture control on the camera to make changes... the camera manages the lens' aperture internally...
Perfect explanation and thanks very much. That's what is happening. As long as I have it on 22 everything is great, move it off and I get an error. So was curious if the camera was making the adjustments. Thanks everyone for their awesome quick help!

When using a D lens on a DSLR, you always place the aperture ring to the minimum (not all of them are 22!). Use the slider to lock it in place so you don't accidentally move the ring and miss a shot!
The aperture ring is from the 'old days', when you had to turn the ring to set the aperture. 'Toggers have been doing this for decades. Aperture ring-less lenses are a very recent invention (and one I abhor!)
