Hard to say at this point I haven't tested it very extensively, from what I can tell it's very close to the 300mmF4 with the 1.4 TC. What I have noticed is that the 80-400 focuses faster than the 300mm & TC. The VR alone is huge on account that I do a lot of hand held shooting. With this lens and my 24-120VR & 16-35F4 is pretty much all I will need on an outing from now on. The 300mmF4 @ $1100.00 new is a huge bargain naked it has spectacular IQ especially when used with a crop camera like a D300.
