Nikon 70-200 VRI on D800- strange fine-tune 'problem'

Hi everyone

So- I've got a 70-200 VRI that I'm using on my D800. The body's just back from Nikon for the AF fix and is now pretty good, especially after the recent firmware update.

I was trying to dial in a good AF fine tune on the lens at 200mm, and no matter what I tried I just couldn't get a sharp image, I zoomed out by maybe, maybe 10mm, and suddenly everything was tack sharp at far left, far right and central focus points. Is this typical behaviour?

It's difficult to do an auto fine tune on a zoom lens. Are you using a tripod with your test?

Zooms are often a little soft at extremes, and the long extreme in particular, so while it's not surprising I find it a little more surprising given the lens you're using. That said, as Glenn states, zoom lenses are tough to fine tune.
