Nikon 35-70 2.8

I've looked for ages for a fast mid zoom for my "new" D700 and it came down to the Tamron 28-75 2.8 or the older Nikon 35-70 2.8.

Finally bit the bullet and found a pristine 35-70 for £190 ($290).

Does anyone have any experience with this lens at all?

I have one and it's a great lens if you're careful how you use it in backlit situations. It wants to flare a bit more than newer G lenses.

I had one but sold it recently. I didn't sell it because it was bad optically but because of the limited range. I've been using my 24-120 f/4 VR more and when I needed speed I went with the 50 1.8 or the Sigma 35 1.4 so the 35-70 was sitting around unused. The IQ is good and it's built like a tank. It doesn't have a motor so requires a body with one or must be used in manual.

have to agree with you both.

Stunning lens. Tack sharp at f4 and above (a little softer in the corners as you may expect) but for me, it's up there with my 50mm prime for IQ.

Also ran into the veiling issue when the sun was in front of me, nothing cupping my hand over the top of the lens didn't solve though.

The HB-1 hood that it comes with is pretty useless, it could have done with a longer hood, on DX that isn't a problem but on FX, longer hoods cause vignetting; after a lot of internet searching I'm still yet to come up with a solution.

Love this lens though, for the money; it's great.

Agree also about the range, I will probably pick up a wider lens at some point but it's not a necessity right now.

Nice pickup. It was actually Nikon's pro mid range zoom lens for years until they released the 28-70/2.8. I was looking for a decent one for ages, but decided at the last minute, 35mm just wasn't wide enough for me.
