I recently bought a 28-300 3.5-5.6G but i'm not happy with that lens. I saw a 180mm 2.8 and I can change my lens for that one. I wonder i the 180mm 2.8 is worth trading for my 28-300? I noticed that I prefer fixed lenses over zooms.

I've never used it, check out the reviews online....I do have the 80-200mm F2.8 [very good lens] that costs about the same as the 180mm

Is that without the VR version? The 180mm f2.8 will be much sharper than this old kit lens. Can't say which is better since I have not tried neither one of them. I use a mixed of zoom and prime lenses. My preference varies depending on what I am going to shoot. Each lens has their own purpose and the 180mm f2.8D is designed more for portrait and sports type photography.

It is the VRII version (Nikon AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR)

Just like the kit lenses, as you zoom in with this zoom lens, your aperture will take you to f5.6 and that is still wide open. Not ideal for indoor use and will require a lot of light such as flash and bump up your ISO.

Yes and i'm not satisfied with the sharpness at >200. The difference in zoom between 200 and 300 is also little imho.

Is there a large difference between the AF-D version and the non-D? The second hand price difference is a few hundred euros (i can get a non D for about 350 euros and a D version for 650).

A good friend of mine has three of these lenses including the Ais version. He can't seem to let go any one of them. When used properly with good technique, you can produce great images.

Is the difference in price between the D and non D worth it or is it a minor difference and can I save my €€€
