Nikkor AFS 80-200 2.8 - no AF with the TC-17 ??

Sorry for the bad picture q, alas this is the weather and light conditions I shoot in with my newly acquired used 80-200 afs 2.8.

This lens works perfect! What a lovely lens! This is at 200mm;

Alas, when I attach the TC-17E converter the AF doesnt work. Why doesnt it work??
maybe no surprise since Nikon dont list it as compatible, but as 70-200 2.8 works
why doesnt this one work?

The tc-17 is model no 340875
Bought it used last week. Cannot be very old, it looks brand new.

Nb. This tc 17!works perfect with my new micro 105.

Your lens has an aperture ring. I'm not sure any of the latest AF-S lenses offer that. Most likely it's an AF-D lens.

It could be an AF-S lens...

If it is, it will have the words "Silent Wave Motor" on the gold band behind the focal-length indicator.

Lol...Ken Rockwell. I used to quote him, too...used to being the operative phrase. Let's just say he's not a popular topic of discussion here.

Right. I too don't have a lot for faith in his actual reviews, but I think his posting does prove you can have an AF-S 80-200mm lens with an aperture ring.

Actually IMHO at risk of flaming his reviews used to be spot on....at least all his reviews of my older Nikon gear were.

I could not find a TC that would work with my 80-200 AF D F2.8 but it is not AFS. The lens crops so beautifully I wouldn't use it anyway most likely

This is a photo of MY lens, an AF-S 80-200 2.8

The MOST important thing is that TC17 works perfect with my 105 micro nikkor.
WHich is does -- I have tried it and it is perfect, giving me a 180 mm macro lens, just what I needed!


I really dont care anymore if my 80-200 works with my TC-17, this 80-200 is way to big to walk with me in the mountains. I know for sure my 80-200 will be used only at home, shooting local events as carraces and kids playing football. That one and my 150-600 Sigma -- these two lenses will be a perfect match, without need for TCs.

Conclusion. My 80-200 2.8 works perfect in every resperect on my d750 The autofocus is fast and silent.

The tc-17 is a bad match for 80-200 in af sense. It will not autofocus.

In every other respect it works perfect,

Now I will explore the kenko option.

Know you are saying:
