So I may have a chance to get my hands on a used Nikkor AF 80-200 f.28D ED Lens from a family member selling all his equipment.

Thoughts/reviews on this lens, and pairing it with a D7100?

I've got one, and even though I've also got a 70-200 VR2, I can't bear to part with it. It certainly seems as though it's more robust than the 70-200. (Not that I really have any complaints against the 70-200!) I haven't noticed any optical differences between them. The 80-200 does seem to focus a bit slower initially, but doesn't seem to hunt as much after it has found the focus.

I have one and I like it very much. It takes some very sharp photos with very nice bokeh. It is a great portrait lens and it works well for long distance landscapes.

I paid $600 and it was pristine in the box with all the accessories.

If it is priced right I would buy it. Those are some really good lenses even though they are not real fast on the focus, they produce some very nice photos.

I owned the two ring version for a few years and used it with my D7000. Took many nice shots with it and sold it only after acquiring the 70-200 VRII. Great pro lens (used) for 1/4 price of a 70-200. Good luck.

If I was you I'd jump at the chance, especially if you can get 'family rates'.
The 80-200 is meant to be a fantastic lens, and very solid. Hopefully it's a two ring version they are selling. It also doubles up as a perfect "home protection weapon" because that thing is really solid for hitting people on the head (I don't do it on a regular basis, but you know...)

This is one of those lenses where you can truly say "they don't make them like they use to". I've had an eye on the 80-200mm for a while and only find the Tamron 70-200mm to be a lens worthy of comparing to it.

EDIT: If you don't want it, (and it is 2 ring, not push/pull zoom) please do let me know how much they might sell it for. I'd be very interested :)
