Nikkon J2 lens 30-110mm - necessary ?

Hi friends

I am an absolute amateur and a newbie on this forum so please forgive me if this is a question already asked.

I recently purchased a Nikkon 1 J2 which came with a 10mm-30mm lens. I am mainly going to use it to shoot pics and videos of my friends and family.

Do I need the 30mm-110mm lens for my needs ? Or are they more for people shooting long distance?

thank you so much :)

I would suggest that you get used to the camera, do all you can and if YOU feel you're OK with the 10-30, then you don't NEED the 30-110. You probably have a lot to learn with the new camera so just use it as much as you can with what you have until you really feel you want what the 30-110 has to give.

Thank you so much for your very prompt reply.

I share your sentiments. - Just a photographer had me convinced I need the 30-110mm lens but all I really want to do is take good snaps of my friends and family - maybe portrait pics as I like playing around with photoshop.

Totally agree with you about the learning curve - its a lot steeper than I had hoped !

thanks again :) PS if you would recommend any books for beginners like me that would be great

Totally agree with Marcel. The Nikon 1 10-30 is a good basic lens. What having one lens will force you to do is concentrate on perspective and composition. Don't forget that the Mirrorless Forum is a good place for questions on your new camera too. Good luck and enjoy!!

Thank you my friend. I will check that forum out now ! Never knew taking a proper picture could be so technical ! Much newly found respect for photographers. !!!!
