NiK Complete Collection just got WAY affordable

Am guessing this is what the price is gonna be for the pack henceforth and isn't necessarily a limited time offer?
How about future updates? Would that need to be bought again as a new pack?
I had tried the hdr Efex earlier but the plugin wasn't working in LR but did work in Photoshop...

I had trouble with the HDR plugin working in lightroom too but then Eduardo and Jake pointed out that it did not show in edit but under Export... I tried it that way and it worked fine.. just an FYI.

From what I heard in the webinar last night, updates will be free for life with the bought license. And apparently they are working hard at improvements.

I think my first impression of Nik's price drop was wrong. Last night I read a few articles about Nik's move and they pointed out how Nik's competition offer their products at between half and a third of Nik's former price tag. And combined with Lightroom's move to the lower end it only makes sense that Nik would follow suit. Nik is by far the best plug-in on the market but if they price themselves out of competition it won't matter. The DSLR market, along with cell phone and iPad cameras, has grown so much in the past few years they can easily make up in volume what they're losing in the price drop.

So I'm thinking I was wrong in believing Nik will move all its efforts into combating Instagram since it looks like they're trying to capture the broader Adobe plug-in market place. I still believe Instagram is in the crosshairs of Google, Nik's Adobe plug-ins will continue to be a priority for the company in the near future.

Saw this blog post by someone at NiK that shows the NiK Complete Collection is now $149 for the full, Photoshop compatible package. That's Color Efex Pro 4, Silver Efex Pro 2, HDR Efex Pro 2, Viveza, ... the whole shebang!! You get a 15-day free trial as always, and there are a ton of folks like Tim Grey who offer 15% discount codes, so that would be what, around $125 for the whole suite. That's 1/2 what I paid 3 months ago, and it was worth it at the old price.

I can't tell you just how good these tools are. Go download the trial and give it a whirl. I can't believe they're this cheap.

Nik Collection

Well thanks a lot Jake, I would have hoped you'd have realised how expensive the last couple of months have been for me and not sent this info :)

I've looked at Nik a few times and it was always more than I could justify at the time. Now it's about £86 with the 15% off so I'll have to get it. At least it installs on two machines like my adobe cloud stuff so my wife can use it as well. I wonder if that will pacify her after she told me no more for a while after the pocket wizards and Sekonic 478DR last week?

Thanks guys...
Funnily none of the plugins worked either through 'edit in' or the export feature. Will try again.
The only factor that bugs me a bit is the fact that Google is now the owner... And with all things Google, the need to keep a watch exists, if you know what I mean :)
Hopefully this pack has not been 'updated' with any of Google a goodies... And will probably stay clear of any Google related update :p

If it installed correctly you should be able to right click on the photo in Lightroom and choose Edit In... and the plugins (except HDR) should be there. If it's not, call their tech support number. I had to do this in my upgrade from the Lightroom version to Photoshop version and they were very helpful and patient. There are tutorials on their website for installing products as well, so take a look at that as well. But I don't remember ever having an issue with LR access after install.

FYI - just to put him on the record, Scott Kelby mentioned this price drop yesterday and stated that he believes that it may mean the death of these plugins. His thought is "Why would a company as big as Google be concerned about something like Photoshop and Lightroom Plugins?" I hope he's wrong, because I sat through a demonstration of onOne Software's similar tool package "Perfect Photo Suite" and it's about the same price as Nik used to be, and still requires the layer mask hassles of Photoshop instead of the ease of the Control Points. That said, he also said later in the day that he's abandoned doing B&W conversions in Photoshop and just uses Silver Efex Pro 2, "just like every other photographer he knows", so who knows? I know that the post-announcement webinars have promised continued support, so I'll take them at their word until they change their minds.

The fact that Google announced that it won't be supporting Capture NX2 yesterday isn't so surprising (my opinion) since it's a brand-specific package, and it makes more sense for them to concentrate on the entire market and not just a good chunk of it.

Thanks Jake... I hope they continue support but if not, I still have a package that will do what I need for a long time on...

That's my take too, Rocky. I've not yet run into anything that I would call a shortcoming of the products in the suite, though I suspect you see those more often than not when you find something that someone else is doing new or better. I would imagine that it's always possible to improve the algorithms behind the Control Point technology, but I'm happy to use it "as is" for a while.

I had this same reaction as Kelby did when I read about Google's move. But if you're Google and you have very deep pockets and a long term view you can price your product at a level that destroys your competition and once you've captured 80%+ of the market you can revisit the issue of pricing. Add to that the rapidly expanding photography market, you can make up in volume what you're sacrificing in price. So no, I don't see this as throwing the towel in, I think it's more of a "rope-a-dope" move and Nik is anything but dead.

Barring the price advantage of Nik and if you can only own one, which one would you buy between Nik and Photoshop. Please explain why. I don't own any of these software but I do own Lightroom. Thanks in advance.

That's a question that, by the way you're asking it, can't really be answered. To begin with, Nik is a plugin software that was originally intended written to be a plugin for Photoshop that has since been adapted to work with Lightroom, too. Both Lightroom and Photoshop are free standing programs and do not need each other but Nik needs either PS or LR (or Aperture) in order to function.
That said, Nik is a great plugin for both LR and PS. In a perfect world you would want all three. Using Nik from Photoshop is much more powerful than Nik from LR, I suspect it has something to do with Nik being originally a PS plugin.
So if it's at all possible that you can get both PS, Nik and LR, you'll be set for a long time. It is a powerful combination so I would suggest you save and scrimp your pennies and buy them both. You can get a great deal on PS using the student/teacher option.

The Nik software suite programs can also be used as stand alone but they won't open a NEF file. They'll open any jpeg and will work with them as stand alone.
