Re: nidding's first year of shooting

Thanks wud.
So far I can only say that I'm really excited about my new lens! It's just a nice focal length and being able to go to 1.8 is really a significant improvement over the kit lens :)

Someone I don't know just made one of todays images a favorite on flikr. That's a first for me, so I think the 35 brings good mojo :D

Day 28
Today I went to visit my dear old grand parents on my fathers side. I just had time to do a quick snapshot of both of them. I was dealing with the natural light in their apartment, so especially with my grand mother I have had to do some adjustments to that as it was exaggerated by the B/W conversion. I hope you enjoy the outcome :)

The action shot could have been framed better, but at the size I can see, it looks like you got the face sharp - thats good :)
If you wanted it more sharp, then 1/13 isn't enough.. I would definitely have used a higher aperture, since the background aren't that interesting looking at. Also a higher iso.

Great images of your grandparents!

What I was going for was a blurred background from following the sleigh ride with a pan. A big problem with that was that the hill was very short, so that I couldn't really get the flow of the pan right. I think the size you can view the picture here is about the largest that her face appears sharp ;) Also when I took the camera out it immediately started snowing, which meant I only gave it a few attempts.
But it's good advise, wud. I'll definitely take that with me and give it another try another time :)
As I said in another thread today. Luckily we learn from errors as well as success. And with the good feedback on this side, the learning just gets easier :)

And thank you! I kinda like them myself.

Ahh silly me. Of course. I see it now - sounds like you're right, just to small a hill :)

Day 29
I saw a lecture on flash photography this morning and wanted to try a diffused directional flash. Not that easy, but I think it could become good with practice :)

Day 30
Today my sweet wife was patient enough to sit through my very first attempt at a portrait. I used an on-camera flash and wanted to try out some techniques. It didn't quite work, so I ended up with some rather plain light.
Also I had a lot of trouble getting my camera to autofocus and when I turned on AF assist, it only worked like one out of ten. What am I doing wrong?
Anyway, if any of you guys have some comments on what I should do differently I would be very happy to hear them :)

(I know I said I would commit to the 35mm for a month, but as the AF didn't really work and the 35 isn't that much of a portrait lens, I changed to my manual focus 135 instead, rather than my kit lenses. It was a bit on the long side, but it goes to f/2.8, which I think I needed to get the poor background as much out of focus as possible)

Day 32
A couple of my friends played a local meatl festival and I thought this might be a good time to do something I haven't done before.

Technically the pictures were taken after midnight and can't count for day 32. As I expected this, I did take a quick photo of my fishtank before leaving home...

I like the fish tank - day 32. The other shots qualify for day 33 since they were taken after midnight.

Thank you marilynne :) I really enjoy making little tweaks and adjustments to try to make all the creatures in there thrive. It's a really relaxing hobby :)

I think I might be able to come up with another photo for today, but you're right. They could count as day 33

Day 33
Do you know that, when you take a picture and look at the LCD and think "Hmm. I think this looks NICE!", but then when when you come home and look at it on your computer you think "WHAT is this horror?!?" That's what happened today.
Oh well ;)...

I had some issues with some heavy purple fringing (is that what it's called?). I guess I should expect some when shooting at f/1.8 against bright light, but this does seem very heavy to me.

I managed to get it somewhat cleaned up by desaturating magenta in Aftershot. For this specific image it was a possibility, but is there any other way of removing this, that might actually work in a picture that actually was supposed to have magenta in it?

Day 34
I think I'm beginning to long for spring and that this shows in what I see and photograph. Today is dedicated to a hope that spring will come soon :)

On my walk today I went to a local patch of forest and behind a hill I found a wonderful series of childrens' dens spread over something like 150 feet of hill terrain. I wasn't able to get any goods photos of it today, but I will surely go back there in the spring or summer, and take some photos of these lovely little places :)
