the refurb can be trusted? I am a little concerned. I will go with the advice I receive here, though.

With someplace like Adorama or B&H, absolutely! I bought my D90 as a refurb from B&H last year and other than some extremely minor cosmetic wear it's like new. In fact both places have a rating system that indicates exactly what you're getting.
