Some Additional Things to Consider RE: Landscape Photos...

I'd just like to point out that when it comes to taking really good landscapes, cramming "more" into your frame does not always equal a "better" landscape photo. Even if you could fit all of Yosemite Park into a single frame it wouldn't make for a great shot. One of the keys to really powerful landscape shots is isolating a specific subject and filling your frame with it. When it comes to compositions, simple is almost always going to be a good thing. I see way too many ultra-wide angle landscapes that leave my eye wandering all over the photo because there's no clear subject, no power in the shot. Remember also, that the wider the focal length the farther away, and hence "smaller", your subject is going to appear. My over-arching point here is that fantastic landscapes can be taken at most any focal length. You don't need to be able to go to 11mm to get great landscapes. I'd be totally fine if I could go no wider than 24mm on a DX body... Heck, I'd be fine with a 35mm f/1.8G probably 99% of the time if that's all I had.

The road to better photography starts when *stop* asking yourself, "What lens do I need to get the shot I want?" and *start* asking yourself, "How do I get the shot I want with the lens I have?"

I'm in the same boat as you, Rebekah - I'm going to Garmisch in Bavaria later this year and want a nice wide lens for mountain landscapes. I'm looking at renting the Nikkor 10-24 AFS for my D3100, which for 10 days will cost around £65-70.
So if you aren't sure, why not rent a couple of different models and try them out in you own time before splashing the cash?

Good idea! I never thought of that!

If you have never been to Garmisch Partenkirchen, you are going to love it!

I have been Mike, I spent time there in my Army days skiing in the winter, and mountain biking and climbing in the summer... I always loved the place and I've wanted to return ever since I left the Army.
Now I'm taking the wife there for our wedding anniversary in the first week of December so we can catch the Christmas markets.

Any kit lens that start with 18-xxx. You won't get enough out of any other wider lenses to justify their prices until you get to FX bodies.

DX will always have that crop factor adding x1.5 to any field of view/focal length. What I've personally noticed though, is that some kit lenses like 18-70 are either mislabeled or dialed in to mimic lack of that crop factor as best they can. I've noticed that my old school 50 and 18-70 at the 70 end had about the same field of view, which would contradict 18-70 being, an actual 18-70 instead of ~26-105. That said, I suspect Nikon does some kind of magic to the kit zooms to make them work with DX format better.

"You won't get enough out of any other wider lenses to justify their prices until you get to FX bodies" How do you come to that conclusion ??
