Looks like this lens will launch selling for $799. Thoughts on that price point?
Full-frame, optically stabilized, relatively fast at 400mm and priced well under $1000? I'd call that price point nothing short of outstanding.

If this lens had been released by Nikon instead, I'd put the MSRP at twice what Sigma is charging.

I agree, not sure when it will be available in the UK or how that price will translate into £'s but I'll be very tempted. I'm going to travelling for a year and the weight difference between it and the 200-500mm is very appealing!

I think it's very reasonable and actually better than I expected. Unfortunately it's listed at C$1200 in Canada, which is 14% higher than the exchange rate. I'll wait until the price comes down to around C$1000. In the mean time I'll enjoy reading the reviews. This lens would be a motivation for me to shoot more in sports/wildlife.

@Elliot87 its in stock at my LCS in Cleethorpes, not going near though as i would like one for my V2.

I know the feeling. The only way I could justify getting one is to sell my 200-500mm, which ultimately I think is the better lens on paper anyway, apart from the size and weight. I'm really trying to ignore the fact that it exists but failing miserably.

Let me know if you buy or find any reviews on it.

Well one of you are going to have to take the hit for the team and buy one, so that you can tell the rest of us what its like :D

It wont be me at the moment,we ordered a new car got home from the garage to get a call to say the receivers had been called into Nancy's work place still waiting to see if the job will survive, decided not to cancel the car so that will arrive some time in May.
Thought i had best hold of spending at the moment.

From what I've seen and read so far, I think this is an excellent lens for the price.
Thanks for the links. DPREVIEW also has sample photos today.

If it had a larger maximum image size and a closer minimum focus distance ( like the cannon 100-400l ii ) then I would snap one up asap.
It hasnt so I wont.

What do you mean by larger maximum image size? Just curious. I want one for weight and size saving over my 200-500 but finding it hard to justify spending £800 to save a kilo in weight. I could sell the 200-500mm but I'm certain I'd regret it.

If you sell your 200-500vr and get this you will regret it.
If this new sigma had a better close up performance I could have a use for it.
I would like a larger image and closer focus for butterflys and dragonflys like the cannon lens I mentioned or the nikon 300f4 and tc14.
