I use external drives to backup my laptop drive only. One goes in the fireproof safe, the other in the closet

My only computer is a laptop
I could have been more clear I guess. I meant I only use the external drives for backups, I do not use them regularly as daily storage

The one thing that the majority of people (and businesses too) actually don't do, it to test their backups!!

It's all well and good backing up your data, but you need to be able to restore it too, and like I said, this is where a lot of people fail

Agreed. I use my norton backup utility aa well as do a tradional folder copy of everything. Can't be too careful
