New member with first ever DSLR - D7000

Hello to all,
I just made the jump from the Nikon P500 superzoom (which I love despite its limitations) to the D7000. Okay, several HUGE jumps.

I've only had it a couple of days and I'm really glad I kept my P500 because with it, I feel semi-smart and with the D7000, I feel mostly, well, not-so-smart. :chargrined: But I knew that would happen. This is my first ever DSLR so while I shot a lot in aperture mode with the P500, it's a whole new ballgame now. I keep telling myself it's going to take thousands of photos before I get even as good as I was with the old camera but it does get frustrating so I figured I should join another forum for some support.

I've got a couple of books I'm reading on it (in addition to the manual) and I'm signed up with an intro class the place I bought the camera. Alas, that won't be for another 6 weeks so of course I'm going to be playing with it now.

I'm a writer by trade and we recently converted our city garden into a native garden for wildlife. My interests in photography are to document the wildlife (birds!) that visit the yard.

Anyway, hi everyone!

Welcome Susan.

The folks are very kind here. They offer constructive and useful criticism without making you feel like a dork. Some of their photos are so breathtaking they make you want to throw your camera away. Don't do it! They appreciate your efforts and help you improve. :encouragement:

Jack and Laura, thank you.
I appreciate the warm welcome. I really DO feel like a dork right now but I knew that would be the case with making the jump. I'm thinking about grabbing a P&S of some kind for some macro shots because it will be a long time before I can capture them (or afford a macro lens) with the D7000.

For start, a piece of advice, plan carefully your future lens.
You have great macro lens that also take excellent portraits for a fair price.

Now it's practice time.

Hello Susan welcome to the forum! The D7000 is an amazing machine you will fall in love with it and your poor poor P500 will get kicked to the curb! LOL You can still do macro with a kit lens just try it! Lastly, anything native is super cool to me whether it be native gardens, native peoples, native North American fish in an aquarium...go native is my motto! :)

Thanks all for the welcome. I'm reading the forum to see if I can find the answer to my first question before posting. Gawd, the most frustrating thing is knowing the potential of the camera and trying to find my patience to climb that steep learning curve. :)
