Hello everyone. I'm a lifelong hobby photographer and considered myself an advanced amateur until recently when I realized that I wasn't really practicing everything I knew about photography and was mostly taking snapshots to document my experiences.
Since I retired in 2015, I've been able to travel with a motorhome throughout the United States and much of Canada. But, my last trip ended about a year ago and I'm currently spending a lot of time cataloging the pictures I've taken throughout my life. (Travel will continues after my wife fully recovers from some extensive foot surgery, hopefully late this summer or early fall). Looking at the pictures I've taken over the years made me realize that I could take better pictures if I'd just slow down and take the time to apply my knowledge.
Toward that end, I recently upgraded my equipment from a Nikon D3400 to a D850 and am spending a lot of time really learning how to use it. My first real problem with it happened this morning when it began to suddenly make a lot of noise. A Google search led me to the Nikonites forums where I discovered how to fix the problem. So, here I am.
Incidentally, the Dr in my user name is based on a doctoral degree in physical geography. My background also includes training in geology and geomorphology and I'm especially interest an arid lands geomorphology and the evolution of river systems.
