Hello to everyone. I’ve used Nikon since 1978. I’ve just retired and would like to focus on wildlife, especially birds in flight. I want to sell most of my current equipment and buy a used D500, and a zoom, or maybe a prime that won’t break the new fixed income bank. I’m here to ask questions, and get members opinions. I look forward to learning from the valuable knowledge in this group.

New member myself...
Welcome aboard..
Could I ask you why the D500?
I have issues with the EVFs on Mirrorless, add to that I really prefer looking through the glass of a DSLR… It’s habit I guess. I want a flagship body for wildlife/birds in flight. I’ve owned many Nikon flagship bodies through the years. The idea of a crop sensor flagship/Pro level body seems to fit the bill. I am worried that in a decade I’ll regret not just going mirrorless. I don’t know what to do… But I love birds in flight. I live in Scottsdale AZ which has really become a fantastic Raptor paradise.

I wouldn't worry too much about going mirrorless right now... I did, and the biggest difference I notice so far, is how much easier it is to get dust on the sensor... In my opinion, the important thing, is to be out there, taking pictures and bringing home good memories...

I felt the same way about the EVF when I bought my first mirrorless. After a couple weeks I was completely used to it, and hated going back the the optical viewfinder of my DSLR. I really like the exposure preview you get with the electronic viewfinder. When I am shooting a difficult subject, it is so easy to just hit the exposure compensation button and dial until I see a good balance between highlights and shadow.

Of course, not all the EVFs are created equal. The EVF on my Z5 was good, but I got a good deal of blackout when shooting in continuous mode. I don't have that issue with my Z8. Actually, I believe that has more to do with the sensor and processor, than the actual EVF. The Z8 also has more pixels, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal IMO.

Can you still buy the D500 brand new or are you going for a SH?
I had a quick look here in Aus, and I was able to find only one new for $2400 AUD... Plenty of SH starting around the $700AUD.. It is a big difference...

Welcome!

I love my D500 I bought used (no longer available new in US)

I recommend buying what you think you will use. I have the f mount 200/500 zoom and it's great for birds. Also very affordable for this also retired dude.

Take time and get what leaves you funds to get out and enjoy. Congratulations on your retirement!!

Thanks, retirement has been interesting so far. After looking over the finances I felt doomed to making do with what I have. Then my wife suggested that we both pick two hobbies, and sell the other stuff that we’re not likely to use.

True, Nikon stopped making the D500 in 2022, but I’ve seen ones for sale as “Like New“ from KEH in the $750 - $900 range (less than 20K shutter actuations). I’ll be looking for a used long lens as well. Nikkor 200-500mm is, nice but 3rd party zooms as well as primes are in the running.
