I thought people bought grips to extend the number of shots they can take, not a place to put "your pinky"

Alot of folks do get the after-market grip for their D5100 for the extra grip, especially if they have big hands. And yes, they also get it for the extra battery power. Though, for some, the extra battery is just a bonus. If all people were after was extra battery power, i think they would just buy an extra battery. Besides, if any amateur - and we are mostly all amateurs on here - needs more than 660 photos in one day, then they are taking pictures of alot of garbage. I would buy the base grip just for the extra grip, yes i would ;)

I bought one of the Neweer battery Grips and if I had the choice between the 2, what I bought and what you are showing, I would still have bought what I did.

It is much more than just a "pinky" grip. Yes, provides a place for that.. also I can hold the entire camera with only the grip while I am reviewing photos on the screeen (I do that a lot when others want to see such as at a party) I find it awkward to hold and review without it...

I have had no issues with it, nice (though not mandatory) to be able to just stuff the batteries in. No, if out and about and doing stuff outside with a lot of walking around, likely would remove it for the lighter weight.

That, and it is cheaper than what you are proposing... $24 as opposed to $40... I am viewing it as getting more and costing less...

Thats my two cents worth... enjoy the day!

And then there are those that buy a grip to bulk the camera up to make it look professional...

660 photos...That's less then half of what I've shot in a day and not a "rubbish" shot amongst them..

MotoX...Surfing...Ballet...Soccer..

That thing holds no batteries? Hmmm. Why not just get one that holds another battery.
And is also a bit cheaper. I had a battery grip I used on my D3100, that I
bought on Amazon for $27.00. It worked great for me, more power and fit my big hands!
Oh yea! It fit on the D5100 too.

I don't get it. Why invest in something that doesn't really hold an extra battery, nor allow for vertical picture taking? From what I hear, you can get a cheaper battery grip that does all of the above, for under $100.
