Two tips...

1. Read the manual!

2. Take lots of pictures. It seems that each new camera comes with a whole bunch of bad ones before you get to the good ones.

3. Out of the box the camera is not set to its optimum settings for some cosmically stupid reason. You want to set the camera to "Fine" if you're shooting jpg. In time you will want to move to editing your raw files called NEF, but all in due time.

Enjoy the camera, it will take amazing pictures.

Welcome to the D5100 owners group! Sounds like your off to a great start! My best advice is to read the manual and have fun taking photos! I often use my manual as a reference as I try new ideas, and it helps a lot! Congrats on the new camera and gear! :D

I would still shoot both raw and jpeg. In time, as you get better with your photo editing skills and photography you may want to go back to those images. The other reason is that you can do so much more with the raw files than the jpeg files.

I also noticed that I can't count. I said two tips and gave three... DOH!

Welcome.
