Hello,

My name is denny and I recently purchased a Nikon D7000 with a 18-100 kit lense. I am interested in beginning a 2nd career in photography. I have looked for classes however, there are no classes coming up within the next 6 months in my area. I am learning as I go. I have a career in advertising currently and this will be a supplement to my current field. I welcome any and all tips, suggestions and opinions to get me on my way to better photos.

Welcome Denny! First thing is read/study the manual, get to know your camera inside/out and take allot of pictures! Enjoy the site!

Start with this book - Mastering the D7000 by Darrel Young. It's a fantastic book and will clue you in on all the functions of your camera. And what is nice is he gives you his preferences for the settings and his reasons why.

Read the manual to understand all the bells and whistles. Then don't forget that digital images are cheap so you can take zillions of them and learn what looks good as you progress.

As the above have mentioned, there is just one way to really get to know your camera, and that's reading the manual it came with. You don't have to start at the beginning...lol.......but read the sections of the manual that pertain to the part you want to know about with your camera. There is no easy road to picture perfection, Denny. It takes a lot of reading and practicing and shooting and more reading. :) Eventually it'll all fall into place. :) Well......most of it. :) Welcome to the forums.

Manuals put me right to sleep. The Nikon D7000 for Dummies is more interesting and it's easier to find those 'need it now' reference sections. Once you go through that the technical manuals are easier to use.
Another thing I find helpful is to find the kind of photos I would like to take and try to get the meta data from it so I can start with the right settings. Of course, most of my best ones were accidental. LOL!

Welcome Denny. There's a great D7000 walk through and tutorial on YouTube by a man named Jared Polin aka froknowsphoto. He has the best walk through vids for this particular camera. He also has a video that breaks down every section and category in the menu with a fu description of what t does.
