Need to replace general use lens

Hello all. I'm new to the forum and would appreciate your advice. I've been taking pics for many decades, and like to take a lot of different kinds of pictures, cars in motion, planes, people, buildings, landscapes, pets, and too many other things to list. I have a D80 and will upgrade that some time in the next year (I'm thinking about a D600), so I'd like stay away from DX lenses. I have an 18-135 f3.5 that I have used a lot and its starting to show wear. I use my camera for work and fun, so I use it a lot, and most of my work is with this lens. Could you offer some suggestions on what to replace it with? I need to be able to use a mid range zoom for what I do (pictures of building equipment and systems). I don't mind spending extra for a better lens, and I sure don't want to go cheap.
Thanks

I would go D610. And the 24-120 f4 or sigma 24-105.

The D600 in my mind is a risk not needed with the price drops of the D610. And the 24-120 while not the greatest, is still a good performer that will do just about anything you ask of it. A jack of all trades master of none so to speak.

You come from DX: 18-135 that gives FOV equivalent 27-202.

Top end replacement for FX would be a 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 mostly now recommended for that is Tamron. (Nikon will be more compatible and track action faster, but not have better IQ). I'll agree with people above that this is an overkill for most applications (one I plan to do though) and Nikon is quite highly priced.

Since I met a fellow photographer who loves his Nikon 28-300 I keep promoting it, even if I did not try one. Correction in Lightroom might be needed.
Also here you could consider the Tamron option.

Somehow I do believe that the 120mm will be far enough for you, a D600 vs a D80 will give you plenty of crop capability.
