need help picking zoom lens

a bit stupid question cuz i cant find the manual i go to af-s mode (not on 18-105 on my 50 1.4d) and i can only use or auto or 5 where is the 9 points ?

On a D7100 if you use AF-S focus mode you are limited to single point AF or auto-area AF. Dynamic-area AF is disabled. This isn't dependent on the lens. Also, that is an "S" for single point you are seeing not a "5".

No, it just isn't available with AF-S focus mode.

so what focus mode should i use ? if i go to AF-C i cant use dynamic 9 (D9) but its still one dot ..

With any of the Dynamic-area AF modes you still choose the "primary" focus point but it uses the surrounding dots as well. See page 73 of the D7100 manual. There is a better description of how it works on pages 54-57 of the Nikon D7100 Digital Field Guide by J. Dennis Thomas.
