My first Portrait Attempt

Those are very nice for a first attempt Rick! You should be very pleased. I have to say my favorite is the last one. I actually like the background you chose. I have no experience with studio lighting but you appear to be well on your way. As you shoot and review you will figure out what you need and how to use those.

Don't know how I missed this thread but I did.

I love it that you are taking on the portraits sir!

Shoot a few with one of his shoulders leading...remember how whenever you had a studio portrait made of yourself the photographer always manhandled your shoulders into position? lol

Thanks Tami and Jeff! It's a challenge venturing into something you thought you would never do! A fun learning experience for sure! I've got to work on the leading shoulder, I did have him off center for a few, but not extreme enough. I'll shoot for at least 45 degrees next time.

Rick, it is also a learning experience for us noob's who have not ventured into studio portraits (yet). We can look at your pics, progress and the critiques and aquire knowledge... Thanks for sharing your first attempts in public so we all can learn something!

One last shot from last weekend, we liked the expression on this one.

We can see and feel that there is something in the back of his mind. This is a great expressive shot Rick. I'm sure you're going to have fun this winter playing around with people.

Thanks Marcel. Mom was saying goofy stuff to try and get a real smile, I think he was thinking something to the effect of "you're such a dork mom"!

Nice portraits & Looks very attractive. You are so far than me... My first attempt was horrible

Thanks for the comment. Keep working at it! I did a lot of reading before starting out and of course it helps to get some basic studio lighting. I've picked up some more lights and ideas from the group here for my next shoot.

As an update, my black background arrived this week and I hope to have a "second attempt" thread going saturday.

The family has been warned, for some reason they are not as thrilled as me :)

Remember Rick Black on black is hard to shoot. Have them wear another color, unless you really want to challenge yourself ;)

Yes! I have warned my wife. Last time she had my son wear gray until I made him change, against my gray background. Black will be even more challenging. I've got the hair light covered now and have added another light/umbrella. Of course it's 8am and I'm ready to shoot! They will roll out of bed around 9-10 and I'll have to nag them til about 11 to get started!

I do not have a hairlight covered yet... That will be something I have to look at after I get a little more basic practice... Looking forward to seeing your shots and setup! Do you want me to call and wake them up!!?? :)
