My Dog: Mocha....again

Hey I know its only been about 8 hours since i had my last post but since it is a new day i figure i can post this a bit earlier so i can get more feedbacks on my photos.

Camera: Nikon D3100
Lens: Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX
Exposure time(Shutter Speed): 1/100
ISO: 100
Exposure bias: +0.7 step
Focal length: 35mm
White Balance: Direct Sunlight
Setting: Aperture Priority
Date Taken: 7/10/2011 6:34PM pst

Andy, great shot of Mocha, a cute dog always makes for a good subject. Exposure and depth of field are right on. Excellent attentive expression. The only recommendation I have is to crop it down to more of the head and shoulders and eliminate most of the cars in the background. They are a bit distracting especially the gold wheel in the upper right. The point of interest is Mocha and cropping will make him more prominent. In your EXIF data you indicate a +0.7 exposure bias. What is your logic for it? There are photographers who think Nikon cameras underexpose so they intentionally add about +0.7 exposure bias to every shot.

Ahh. Thanks for the input. The reason why i set my exposure a bit higher was because when i had it set on 0, it seem a bit too dark to me (but that could be just me) but yet it does not seem underexpose. I figure maybe if i set the exposure a bit higher it would make this picture better since it is sunny out :p. Here is the cropped picture below. Again thanks for your advice

I had this issue (appears underexposed) before. I turns out to be 1) viewing the photos on camera with a darker setting to the screen brightness, or 2) a computer screen not calibrated correctly.

PavementPilot, photographers have complained for years that the Nikon auto exposure settings underexpose. I met a lady on my trip to Alaska who was shooting with a D3. She routinely had a +0.7 exposure bias because according to her, the camera always underexposed her shots. I personally have not had a problem with the Nikon auto exposure settings. But I have heard this complaint more than once.

What a nice shot ! I really like the original crop. I think if you were to crop it that it would be really nice to maintain as much of the original look as possible.

I'm registered with the complaint department on this issue as well. I frequently shoot @ +0.3 or above, even at high noon.
