My D90 has arrived

I have pretty much gone down the same route as yourself, but not bought things in the same order lol.

I got the D90 first (which is awesome) and a few months ago got the D3100 which coupled with the SB-400 is favoured by the wife, although to be fair, the SB-400 is a pretty good flash and I have used it several times.

I also have both the SB-700 and the Yongnuo 560, both very good flashes.

If you go down the path of getting an SB-700 or any of Nikon flashes, I can recommend the Nikon Speedlight Handbook by Stephanie Zettl, which goes through everything as if you were a total beginner and everything uncomplicated.

I'm glad you're glad with the D90 because this is such a great camera.

Dave how does the sb700 compare to the youngnuo? Would you recommend the Youngnuo as a first flash?

Tami, I would recommend any Nikon flash including the SB-400 to use as "On camera flash" because of their iTTL system. A complete beginner has little problems in getting good pics.

This Yongnuo is mainly used by strobists as "Off camera Flash" although of course you can still use it on camera but you have to alter the power settings to get a good result.

The basic Nikon SB-400 is an underated flash but I can tell you that it gives excellent results. Up from that is the SB-700 which is superb on camera or off with the ability to be creative or just point and shoot.

Bottom line is I would always recommend Nikon's flashes first as on camer or off, but if you want to get into strobist stuff there is nothing wrong with Yongnuo.

Check out youtube which gives a lot of info on both.

I have just received my MB-80 Battery grip for my D90. It makes the D90 much easier to hold and balances the longer lenses (70-300mm) so much better. Shown Nikon D90 body w/50mm f/1.8 FX lens, MB-80 grip.

Now you have a great setup! I bet the addition of the new grip will make shooting with the D90 even more enjoyable.
