Not so fast....

for me I placed a deposit for the D800, which I hope will be available on 22 March. :)

As per Nikon Rumors, there has been a delay in the D800E and D4 shippments and it seems likely the same will hold true for the D800. Calling for mid to end of April.

Today Amazon sent emails to existing Nikon D800E pre-orders indicating that the camera was delayed by the manufacturer and currently they do not have an updated delivery date. Existing Nikon D800 pre-orders did not receive such email yet. I am not sure if this is another glitch in Amazon's system or the D800E is really delayed. A reader in Germany also received similar email from a retailer saying that the D800 release will be pushed back to mid/end of April due to a shutter problem. I am still trying to verify this information. The first Nikon D4 shipment was also delayed.

Nikon D800E also delayed? | Nikon Rumors

Of course this might just be a "rumour" :)

Re: Not so fast....

This all reminds me of the BS I went through getting my D7000. None of the big boys could cough one up for me. I stumbled across the body only at a tiny, mini-mall Ritz Camera shop.

James-

Looking at the biccamera retailer here in Japan, the date has not changed and they even offer a kit lens 28-300mm. The translated release date for the d800 is 22March and April 12 for the D800E.

Re: Not so fast....

I have phoned seven dealers today and they all have long waiting lists, it looks like I will not get one until June that is when I will be on holiday. I was about to get a D700 before the D800 was announced so I have to make up my mind wether to hang on untill July or just go ahead and get the D700 its not an easy decision to make at the moment.

I suggest you call Camera World in Portland, Oregon. They claim an initial shipment of 200 units and only 80 on the waiting list.

Congrats on the Pre Order. Am I the only one that thinks this sensor is NOTHING BUT OVERKILL? For God sakes, what do you need a 36 meg sensor for? I am also not impressed with the fps. I on the other hand can't wait to see your shots with the 800.

I make a comparison between resolution and motorcycle displacement. The more displacement the horsepower you can develop. There's no replacement for displacement. And remember, 3" is plenty. ;)

It's funny because at one stage, most D700/D3 owners had this arguments saying that 12.1MP is way more than enough for most applications, in defense of Nikon's inferior resolution compared to Canon.

This argument holds a lot of truth, who among us are into A0 printing on a regular basis? Some will actually tell you that it is possible to do A0 prints with 12MP if done properly.
And at the time ISO performance were more on the cards, which implied that you can't have too much pixel density.
Now it seems, Nikon fans are changing their arguments.

Fortunately, technology is changing at a rapid pace. In terms of pixel density, we all know that the D800 will have about the same as the D7000 which is already quite a good ISO performer, very comparable to the D700. With 36MP, your cropping ability is massive.
Most important: the D800 will probably have outstanding video capabilities. Something that was seriously missing on the D700 and made many Nikonians switch to Canon.

I agree with bobmielke, there's no replacement for displacement - as long as the rest of the technology follows. If you develop a motorcycle engine that is capable of doing 200hp, the chassis must be up for the job. Same with cameras, if you managed to stack 36MP in a sensor, ISO performance should not be affected.

Stangman98, I think your concerns are answered by the D4, but at double the price of a D800. The D700 is not being discontinued by the way. So if video is not a requirement, the D700 is still an excellent camera.

For me, the D800 ticks all the boxes even if I won't really need 36MP. My main concern with the D800 is storage, image files are going to be quite substantial. Fortunately, storage devices are becoming bigger and cheaper. So it's actually not really a problem!

Well spoken. I've been using 8 Gig Class 10 SD memory cards for a while and have spares ready for the D800. Within days I have a Kingston 16GB ULTIMATE COMPACT FLASH CARD 600x arriving also for that camera. It will reduce the buffer rate drastically for both stills and video. I have also purchased a new memory card reader compatible for my iMac that should read all the huge files the D800 can produce.

Although soon to be updated I'm using Photoshop CS5 and OnOne Software's latest version of Perfect Photo Suite Plugins. The only question mark comes to Adobe's ability to get RAW software updates out to owners of the D4 & D800 owners. I'm sure Nikon will have minimal RAW software shipped with its cameras until then.

I hate to be the barer of bad news but the D700 was officially discontinued, along with the D300s

Nikon D700 & D300S discontinued | News | TechRadar

But I've a question to those who are buying an 800 over an 800E, why? I ordered my "E" a day or two after it was announced and to me it seemed like the obvious choice. The photos are sharper and any moire can easily be removed with the push of a button on Lightroom 4 or the new ViewNX. For me it was a "in for a penny, in for a pound".

I question your source quoted as it is dated in January. Digital SLR Cameras | Nikon Digital Cameras | D-SLR Camera indicates the D700, D300s and D90 are still for sale as of March 01, 2012. That's the official Nikon website.

All the sources that come up when googled, including this one, site the Japanese Nikon web site as their source for the discontinuation. If I could read Japanese, I would tell you for certain whether or not they're right.

The D700's battery do not comply with Japanese regulations any more. I believe it affects Japan only, but we'll see I guess.

bobmielke I live in the U.K so I can only get the camera from the U.K due to the warranty unfortunately. Yes you correct Nikon will continue with the D700 for a while as they see the D800 as different type of camera to the D700

Mine is on order (UK) because I'd quite like a camera from which I could crop images and still get a decent number of pixels. Simples.

That actually is the prime reason for my pre-order. It effectively extends the focal length of my lenses as well. We're getting close now so I'm more "ready" every day to hear that the camera is shipping from my dealer.
