Motorsports lens?

I current am shooting with D3100 and these 2 kit lens, 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR.

My issue is it seems the 200 doesn't have enough reach but I could use a little faster speed, I almost tend to not use the 18-55 just because it's either not the lens I need or my other will cover what I need.

I'm not trying to break the bank nor need the best lens, I was thinking possible carry a prime lens for close ups which are rare unless I'm in the pits or walking around (Rolex 24 is close to action I've shot so far, the furthest was Talladega Nascar race). I'm just not sure which bigger lens to go after or wide angle, etc...I would love a do it all but I know that won't happen.

Any suggestions or ideas to possibly keep my pack light. Budget is less than $1000 but I would prefer close to the $500 mark if at possible.

In the lower range I would look at the 70-300 VRII, but I am not familiar with what all works on the D3100, so maybe someone with that model will chime in. I think it would world because it has the focus motor and would get you out there a little further. Now on the high side you could try to find a 70-200 f2.8/80-200 f2.8 and then add a 1.4 or 1.7 Teleconverter for more reach. Not a lens specialist nor model specific knowledge so you would have to make sure they would work with your D3100. Just know these 3 lenses seem to be the most popular for motor sports. On a little higher side you could look at a 300 f/4.

Sigma 150-500's are tumbling in price on ebay since the Tamron 150-600mm came out..... Could be worth a look if you are on a budget?
