It's real gold, very very thinly beaten out into strips then cut into tiny squares. People put it on that ball. Actually people will put in on a Buddha image to worship. It's not exactly 'worship' as Buddha was not a god, but a way of showing respect. In that Temple there is no Statue to put gold on instead they use the ball as a symbol representing the world of Buddha. So I've been told there.
