As I use the 16-85 and 18-55 at long end, all my bird shots are cropped drastically. Most of then down to 800x800.
For web it is fine. For prints you need only 1800x1200 for 6x4.
That is for images taken at ISO 100. As you up the ISO, noise creeps in, so down sizing helps in retaining sharpness even after noise removal. In short how much you crop depends on the lens you use and the final destination for the image.
