I would love to help, but a little busy right now contemplating the relationship between the Big Bang, the rear cortex of the human brain, and how the hell the Sex Pistols ever got a recording contract.

So all you forum geniuses, now for something REALLY off-topic

our financial year is at an end in the company and I am double checking some of the companies figures for the calculation of my bonus (if any). The bonus calculation is a complex one relying on multiplication factors. I need your help to double check my calculations.

Instance 1:

-2% = Factor 0
2% = Factor 1
20% = Factor 1.5
18.15% = Factor ?

Instance 2:

-2% = Factor 0
2% = Factor 1
20% = Factor 1.5
14.47% = Factor ?

Instance 3:

28% = Factor 0
32% = Factor 1
36% = Factor 1.5
33.68% = Factor ?

Instance 1 = Factor 1.45
Instance 2 = Factor 1.35
Instance 3 = Factor 1.21

Can anyone confirm these results?

Thanks in advance for your help!

As long as the assumption is correct that the factor scales linearly between the lower percentage and the higher percentage, you got them all right. When I'm not taking pictures, I'm an engineer. For everyone else, you can figure these out like this:

Instance 1:
Factor Increase = Higher Factor - Lower Factor
Factor Increase = 1.5 - 1 = 0.5
Factor Increase = 0.5

Percentage Increase = Higher Percentage - Lower Percentage
Percentage Increase = 20% - 2%
Percentage Increase = 18%

Factor Increase Per Percent = Factor Increase / Percentage Increase
Factor Increase Per Percent = 0.5 / 18%
Factor Increase Per Percent = 0.0277777777777778

Your Percentage Increase = Your Percentage - Lower Percentage
Your Percentage Increase = 18.15% - 2%
Your Percentage Increase = 16.15%

Your Factor = (Factor Increase Per Percent * Your Percentage Increase) + Lower Factor
Your Factor = (0.0277777777777778 * 16.15%) + 1
Your Factor = 1.4486111111111111
Instance 2:
Factor Increase = Higher Factor - Lower Factor
Factor Increase = 1.5 - 1 = 0.5
Factor Increase = 0.5

Percentage Increase = Higher Percentage - Lower Percentage
Percentage Increase = 20% - 2%
Percentage Increase = 18%

Factor Increase Per Percent = Factor Increase / Percentage Increase
Factor Increase Per Percent = 0.5 / 18%
Factor Increase Per Percent = 0.0277777777777778

Your Percentage Increase = Your Percentage - Lower Percentage
Your Percentage Increase = 14.47% - 2%
Your Percentage Increase = 12.47%

Your Factor = (Factor Increase Per Percent * Your Percentage Increase) + Lower Factor
Your Factor = (0.0277777777777778 * 12.47%) + 1
Your Factor = 1.346388888888889
Instance 3:
Factor Increase = Higher Factor - Lower Factor
Factor Increase = 1.5 - 1 = 0.5
Factor Increase = 0.5

Percentage Increase = Higher Percentage - Lower Percentage
Percentage Increase = 36% - 32%
Percentage Increase = 4%

Factor Increase Per Percent = Factor Increase / Percentage Increase
Factor Increase Per Percent = 0.5 / 4%
Factor Increase Per Percent = 0.125

Your Percentage Increase = Your Percentage - Lower Percentage
Your Percentage Increase = 33.68% - 32%
Your Percentage Increase = 1.68%

Your Factor = (Factor Increase Per Percent * Your Percentage Increase) + Lower Factor
Your Factor = (0.125 * 1.68%) + 1
Your Factor = 1.21

kluisi, thats fantastic. i was not expecting such a detailed explanation of the formulas you have used. thank you so much for your help.

No problem.

Hi Kris,

could you give me a hand with the formula formatting for Excel for instance 3. The first two I have got but cant seem to get the last one right.

Instance 1.
Factor = 1+(1,5-1)/(20-2)*(18,15-2)

Instance 2.
Factor = 1+(1,5-1)/(20-2)*(14,47-2)

Instance 3.
???

Thanks for your help on this. Once ive got the 3rd formula format the topic can be closed.
