Actually, you're correct - he's a least bittern. They get about 12 inches. They have pretty much the same colors.
So, as herons go, he's a small one. The grey herons we have around here in the summer get pretty big and have very long legs. I think they are so cool. I am waiting for them to return to the pond down the road. There is one there every year.

Yes, green herons are small and don't have the long legs.

Great shot. I am not brave enough to try that hand held yet. What did you use to merge the shots?

Thanks! Since I don't have a mono or tripod everything is hand held. Have enough trouble staying on my bike with just the camera bag. I use Panorama Maker 5. It came with my Nikon Coolpix S3100. Gotta love those little extras when you buy at Costco.

This guy looked like he didn't have a clue what to do with the tree. Would have stayed longer but some really nasty dark clouds were starting to set in and we were about a 5 mile pedal from home.

Both are excellent... love the second such close up detail! Good job (Again/Stil!) :D

Pat in NH

Thanks Pat! The second was a crop, somehow I only got part of his body. He wasn't very cooperative. He was on my side of the canal and decided he didn't want to be near me. I guess it worked out since I got a better shot of him across the canal.
