You don't have to upload a photo to the gallery in order to use it in a post. You can upload an image directly to the post itself and there are at least two threads here that explain exactly how to do this.

check the right side of the screen "upload page" flash or standard, change between the two to see what works for you. Flash doesn't work for me.
No, I know. I uploaded one of the pictures as an attachment, which does work to a degree. It doesn't show the exif data, however, which kind of defies the purpose, I guess

That did solve my problem
I can not, however, figure out how to insert a picture from the gallery, into an already posted post (by editing). So now I have posted both as attachments. Hope that satisfies everyone

That is even easier.
As soon as you click the "Reply" button and get your new window, look at the lower left corner and you will see "My Photos" button. This works even if you use the "Edit" feature.
