Magenta band

Ok, somehow that is reassuring to hear :)

I don't see anything wrong with your cam. If it was a leak, it would leak constantly and should show overexposed parts in every shot. That it usually is at the bottom is because usually there is also the lowest light. If you doubt, shoot such a shot upside down next time. It should show the exact same behavior but at the top (of your cam).

But it doesn't hurt to ask for a second opinion somewhere if you want to be certain. It's not as if I'm a qualified Nikon employee. ;)

To add: you'll encounter the same problem outside when there's plenty of light. If you take shots of a very high DR scene like sunsets, we usually prioritize the highlights and start closing down. That way we create a low light situation ourselves, at least in the sensor's perspective and information will get ditched. In the darker parts you'll encounter the same magenta.

Here's a shot in which I erased parts of the green channel. Suddenly colors appear while the shot still looks pretty normal.

And there can be one more reason why such things appear and that is by using different color spaces and the one not representing the colors of the other accurately because it is a isn't an as wide space. But in your case, I'd say it's the same as in most of mine: clipping issues.

Edit:

I just stumbled upon one of my older shots that has the magenta too. The DR of this scene was too large for my cam and I partly lost a color channel at the bottom. It was still usable in this case but it showed the same magenta instead of the natural colors. I worked it in during processing.

I have been having essentially the same problem when I bought a D810. I also have a D800E, and it never happened on that, after many thousands of shots in exactly the same circumstances. I've done some testing, and it happens in a range of lighting conditions, from ISO400 upwards. It's also always parallel with the longer side of the sensor.

Luckily, the shop I bought it from agrees that it's a sensor problem, and are in the process of organising me a third body. If it turns out that this is an issue with the D810, I have to say that I find it unacceptable. I'm shooting within the camera's limits (even if that is at ISO 12,800), and it's just something that shouldn't be happening. It renders many of the images unusable.

For those interested, here's a link to some NEF files that illustrate the problem: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nqw6sko8933c4tb/AACHlLSJr-7llWM9U4XD54kla?dl=0

I just downloaded the first NEF (runners) and those striped parts at the top isn't the same problem. What light was used at that event?

I've seen that striped pattern before but I can't remember exactly what it was about. The first thing that comes to mind is the banding issues light that syncs can trigger but I'm not sure if that was it.

Btw, 12,800 even when an option, is not really a clean ISO mode. Mine does slightly better than the D810 at those ISOs but it still is a setting I'd never use. 6400 is ok but Hi maybe in case of an emergency. But even using that ISO, those stripes should not be there.
