The Nikon codecs is what I was looking for, tried it this morning and presto magico. Took some raw images and they loaded in windows picture viewer no problem. Thanks alot

i've used irfanview for years. That's what I use to view my photos and then work on it in LR. It's simple, easy to use and free.

I'm surprised to see nobody mentioned this aside from Paul. I'm currently using Windows 10 (10122) and I was going to install the brand new version of Nikon's CODEC pack that just came out yesterday... only to realize that Windows 10 already has native support for Nikon NEF and Canon .CR2 files right in explorer and the picture viewer app.

OP: What do your NEF files look like when you display the icons? I get thumbnails on my Windows 10 build... and you can double-click them.

thanks, I've found a program awhile ago. Dx0 optical pro and have been using it. I use this program to do the bulk of the work.. Picture information Extractor from cnet downloads and it works fine. It's a RAW animal. All of the metadata is there. Light and fast.
