Live view in photo mode

I was out shooting with my mentor at sunset yesterday and he was working with me on using split nd filters. He was using live view on his !@#% camera so he could see the filter placement but more importantly he could see how the exposure setting changed the photo. You could see in in live view as he changed the shutter speed. I have searched and searched and can not see how that is possible with my D7100. I can see it in the viewfinder by pressing the correct button but not in live view

I am missing something or correct in thinking it is not a feature in my camera?

I have exposure preview (using live) on the D810 and D750 but it's not part of the D7200 so I doubt the D7100 has it.

Hi Don this is the worst thing about the D7100, I shoot a lot at night and trying to zoom in using live view to focus on the moon stars etc it is just blown out. My now dead D7000 used to show all the changes LIVE in live view but this is not possible on the D7100. So much for an upgrade, love this camera apart from this feature. I don't know why they didn't keep this feature in as it's supposed to be an upgrade from the D7000.
