Lightroom - Previews of Images after Import from Camera

When I transfer my images using View NX2 I get thumbnail previews that I can go through and choose what I keep and what I don't. When I Import from the camera using Lightroom I get a square placeholder that has the message "Image Preview Not Available". If I import the NEF images, with Lightroom, that I transferred from the camers with the NX2 software, I have previews as normal.

I don't understand this. What changes are made to the NEF file when importing with NX2 versus Lightroom?

What version of Lightroom are you running ?
I am running LR5 and I get the image thumbnails when I import NEF files directly from my camera.
It may be a preference setting

Lightroom never changes your NEF file - it is non-destructive. As such, it has to build previews utilizing Adobe Camera RAW. The Import dialog allows you to define the type of previews.

Capture NX2 initially reads the embedded small JPEG from the NEF to display thumbnails. Unlike Lightroom, NX2 will edit your NEF as you process images.

LR should always build some sort of preview on import. There's a dropdown in the upper right corner of the Import dialog that says Build Previews, and you have 4 available options. Are you talking about the previews in the center, source panel? Those should read the jpeg preview in the RAW file. Either way, you should get previews on import.

Mike, my version of LR4 won't read my D610 photos because Adobe doesn't have the D610 listed as as compatible camera. I get the same thing. If you convert the photos to DNG, it shouldn't be a problem. Or...make sure you have the latest update to your version of Lightroom. If you do and it still doesn't read the files, you might have to upgrade to a newer version of LR.

What camera are you using and what version of Lightroom?

D90 camera and Lightroom 3.6. There ar no more updates for LR 3.6 and I cannot run a newer version due to system requirements.

What about a plug-in? Here is a list of supported cameras and the minimum plug-in and Lightroom version requirements. The D90 lists Lightroom 2.1 with camera raw plug-in 4.6, 5.1 (whatever that means) as minimum requirements.
