If you're a visual learner like me and use or are curious about Lightroom, Matt Kloskowsi of KelbyOne is challenging himself to use Lightroom without Photoshop for a month. He is going back and reworking older images and documenting the results on his personal site: Lightroom Killer Tips. Well worth your time and you might pick up a trick or two along the way!

Given some of my other goals this year I can't make that commitment, but one of the things I'm doing in my 365 is to do LR-only edits on a regular basis. There are things it doesn't do that I rely on for certain things - but that said, I'm learning a lot. For example, I've recently discovered what a powerful B&W conversion tool it is - better, or at least far simpler for the same results, than Photoshop. LR5 is an amazing tool, and I will continue to tell anyone who wants to listen, it's the one post-processing tool I can't live without.

And the purpose of doing this is what? Does he sell training material? I am just curious as to his motivation for doing this.

I'm sure it is self promotion but personally I'll take advantage of seeing what he does and try to learn from it.

I understand, may be a good thing. It is doubtful Adobe will (in the near future) eliminate the need for Photoshop since it is their big do all program but who knows, I hate to think of all the years I have been learning photoshop as a waste.

Yes! I already learned something very useful - masking while sharpening the image. I have never found LR to be good for sharpening, so even though an image just needed basic adjustments and I did this in LR, I would go to PS for the last sharpening part.

Sharpening without using the mask is almost useless. I use Unsharp Mask a lot in PS, so I find using it in LR to be comparable provided I slide the mask up over 85 or so. Always hold down the Alt/Option key when using the mask slider to see what you are sharpening.

Excactly, I use unsharp mask too.

Also, in LR, if you use the clone/heal tool, underneath the image it says "visualize spots" - boom! Yeah!

This feature, along with the feathering option on the tool, is what turned LR5 from a nice tool to something that can do just about all the basic things you need to post-process photos.
