Lightroom import duplicates

i have not had any sucess in importing a folder that has duplicate files in it. I have selected "new photos" which says that, excludes suspected duplicates. Metadata shows same info except for the file name. All settings i think are at default.
I have tried "don't import suspected duplicates" both checked and unchecked in file handling. I am using a trial version 3.2.
For some reason i cannot download "4" for trial.
I have imported many folders and exported by age and that as far as i have gotten so far.

The reason you cannot download LR-4 may be due to your computer. LR-4 is a 64 bit specific program and will not run with a 32 bit system.

As for the duplicate importing, I believe LR uses only the file name to determine duplication. Are you finding you are importing duplicates with the same file name or no? It's a little hard to tell from the wording in your post whether this is happening or not.

Sorry but that's mis-information, Lightroom 4 is available in 32 and 64bit. However, the installer does default to the 64bit version on 64bit OSes.

FROM MANUAL:
Specify duplicate file handling when importingLightroom determines a photo is a duplicate of another file in the catalog if it has the same, original filename; the same EXIF capture date and time; and the same file size. You can instruct Lightroom to disregard duplicate files when importing.
In the File Handling panel on the right side of the import window, select Don’t Import Suspected Duplicates.
NOT THE SAME FILE NAME BUT THE EXIF DATA IS THE SAME.
64 BIT SYSTEM
I THING I SEE MY PROBLEM: " ANOTHER FILE IN THE CATALOG." LOOKS LIKE IT IS COMPARING WHATS IN THE CATALOG TO INCOMING AND SINCE I DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING IN THE CAT. &^%*$!

You are right, I stand corrected. I seem to be in good company because Scott Kelby wrote on one of his blogs that he, too, thought it was a 64 bit only program.
