the guy is lowish on funds and the 24-70 AFS is 3 times what hes looking to invest. wheres the logic?

"My budget is $800 for 2 lenses" great!, get the 24-70 and 70-200 for $4300.

cause a poor man buys twice. cmon Glenn. you serious with that comment? not everyone has deep pockets like you :)

if you want to help, recommend lenses within his budget.

I got my 24mm-70mm 2.8g(like new) for $1500 shipped..point is,save a little more for the best glass if possible.

I understand your desire to help but the guy has a $800 budget. how can he possibly fit a $1500 into that? what we think is best is not always in his best interest. we have to consider his needs. not what an ideal solution is. consider he might be family man and is tight with funds and at the end of the month needs money to buy food.

as much as the IQ will be better than all the lenses listed here, the 24-70 isnt relevant to his needs. you must consider what the OP needs. take into consideration that he can buy the tamron or nikon with his CC and make payments on it. with a used lens, he needs the money up front.

adding $200 to the budget for $1000, I would recommend either the 24-85VR or the tamron 28-75 or a used sigma 24-70 or the nikon 35-70 2.8 and a used 80-200 2.8 or even the 70-210 f/4

499 for a good 28-70 and its right on par with the 24-70. Tamron and sigma are all producing good lenses by the reviews as well. Get what u can afford. I still shoot my nikkormat ftn and love the iq.

I'm going to agree with ShootRaw here. I don't actually have experience with any of these lenses (hope to eventually get a chance to try out the 70-200 2.8), but the OP got a lot of good advice from the other posters on this thread for the lenses that he was interested in (including from you rocketman), but sometimes the best advice is to not buy anything at the moment. Take the money currently budgeted and put it away until you have enough to get the lens you're eventually going to want anyway. Maybe ShootRaw could have included an immediate recommendation as well, but again, it looks like that path has been handled by others on the thread.

which 28-70 are you referring to for $500?

I think people who can afford and want the 24-70 AFS dont need to ask. theyll just buy it. Ive been in this situation before and I bought all sigma glass. my intention was to at least work and build myself up and upgrade when money would permit. I didnt have enough work to warrant investing so much for nikons 2.8 zooms. after 2 years I upgraded everything. bought F5's, SB28 all 2.8 zooms, so I know the situation peole are in when they say I only have X money to deal with. investing so much in a lens wont bring him more work. all I know is that he said $800 was the budget, if you remove the D610 cost.

although buying the 24-85 and D610 is a good option as well for the bundle saving

The AF-s 28-70 Nikor f2.8. They run as much as 800 but you can find a good one for just under 500. Make sure it doesnt squeek.

would love to see a link to a used one in good condition for $500. I would say its probably in garbage condition. and on its way to slow dying death SWM wise. trust me I know I was following auction for a 28-70 AFS for months before I bought and for that price its just garbage. nice condition one go from $650 to mint at around $900. I have a mint 28-70 sitting in my bag with a dead SWM in mint condition. bought from ebay.

would still love to see a single lens that closed for under $500 in condition. good condition will never go for less than $650. and mint for around $800. and a good number are dying already. $350 repair.

You must be looking to buy one? :) I traded my 24-85 vr + 100$ for it. Jonathan was gonna sell it to me for 499. Its sweet! I liken this to my 80-200 that I had to sell, if I could have held on to it I would never own the 70-200 vr it was that sharp.

read above again, I have a mint 28-70 sitting in my bag now with a dead SWM. I was looking at auctions for months for a 28-70. I know the prices. show me 1 in good condition that doesnt have a dying motor and doesnt look like it was in iraq and came back. they dont sell for less than $650 in good condition.

What gear?

when I was doing weddings years ago. I was at my peak. I had all nikon 2.8 zooms, F5's Sb28's and my bag was stolen. spring 2013 I made my comeback. bought new (well used) gear and have been slowly coming back. I was out of work for years. got in heavy debt, feel in deep depression. not a good situation. so psyched for this summer though. I already have tons of dates closed.

Sorry to hear that rocketman I would KILL! The f5 is a beast, I love mine and with the 28-70 f2.8 I can throw that in my satchel and never worry about missing a shot. I still shoot alot of film love it. Use my Nikkormat still, helps keep me focused. Its easy to get caught up in the digital mindset of just clicking away and not caring if most of the shots are shit its free.

thank Tim. I agree 100%. im noticing this more and more with me. before I had to make my frames count, today I just shoot cause I can. in proportion of hit rate, its 50% for very good shots. but I get a lot more to keep them before. pluses and minues to both sides. good cause you can capture much more. minus cause the waiting and snipping for the right photo isnt like before. shoot 10 and keep one usuable one. and im getting more and more spoiled.

man I loved my F5's had 3 of them. moved all my sigma gear to nikon lenses over a few years. must be a reason why it happened. you still shoot film?

PS @rocketman122 your status doesn't tell us where you are so it makes it hard to judge comparisons with costs etc. It took me 3 months for a D600 grip to get to me form your source. Way too long if you ask me.

Ya I roll my own B&W and dev. and print it in my darkroom. Film has a petina to it that you just cant get with digital. I shoot medium format sometimes with my RB67 Pro but at .50 cents a shot not very often anymore. I would never get rid of digital just to much latitude with it but I feel VERY much at home with my Nikkormat and a 50 f1.2. Still try to wind my D600 sometimes :)

ah, you got the D600 package? how is it?
youre from australia and the guy who sells them says, hes from china. where im from isnt relevant to how long it takes. the vast majority of those that sell knock offs and 3rd part accessories and products are from china. what costs are you referring to? shipping is free with the package.

dude, it notes his location on the product page. it says Item location:ShenZhen, China. not only that but he notes how long it will take to get to your country. United Kingdom / Australia/Canada 12-25 working days. my country isnt relevant to you. im not selling them. I just bought it and recommended it.

3 weeks is nothing for economy shipping from china. 3 weeks is the average time it takes. but some of my packages come 2 months after. it would be the same amount of time no matter where you are in the world. economy shipping from china takes around 3 weeks or more. sometime packages surprise me and take a week but mostly that is the correct time.

but as long as the grip is good and it works. thats all that matters. did you do the wedding?
