Lenses for action?

Can you recommend any fast lenses? I would prefer a zoom but are a prime faster?

Do you know if 70-300mm are the same/faster/slower as 70-200mm.

Would an extension ring do anything to speed? If I was to go for an extra 100mm for my 70-200 (I know it takes a stop or two at aperture).

AF wise the 70-200mm f2.8 is faster in acquisition, can accept Nikon teleconverters and can use lower ISO compared to the 70-300mm VR lens when shooting indoors are at night.

Okay thanks. Think I'll look into 1.4 converter then.

Still interested in hearing about other lenses used primarily for action, if anyone knows or got some they could recommend.

I have the 70-300 VR and the 70-200 f/4. Personally the 70-200 does appear to be faster but that's not saying the 70-300 is slow either. Both are great lenses. I shoot mostly with the 70-200 now. Sports is primarily what I shoot.
