lens suggestions

No doubt that the Nikon is a great lens, and you have plenty of recommendations for that, so I'll just add that the Sigma 105mm is no slouch either, and does not change in length while focusing as you seem to suggest in your initial post. As Rick suggests, it may be a little more reach than you'd typically want on a macro lens on a DX camera, but the IQ is phenomenal and easily on par with the Nikon. You save a couple bucks as well. If it has a negative it's that the VR/OS is a little noisy, which is a consistent thing with Sigmas, but it works great. If you need proof follow the Flickr link below and hunt down the macro shots.

Thanks for the input, ive seen alot of photos from the sigma 105 and its a very nice lens(probably the most comparable to the nikon IMO) but the nikon is only 100ish more so I would probably prefer the nikon, but we was talking about the sigma 150mm when talking about it being to long for dx and the barrel extending, i would consider the sigma 105 for sure if i found a good deal on a nice used model!

Funny you mention that, The Nikon 105 VR is very noisy also, much more so than all my other Nikon lenses. It is so loud and clunky, I thought there was something wrong with it, until I read it was normal. I'm thinking it's the larger heavy glass elements moving in these big primes.

My Nikon 105 VR is no noisier than my Nikon 70-300VR.

Read a multi lens review on Macro's recently and the sigma 105 came out on top.
I think I entered the Tamron 90mm macro vs in a google search. And that was an older model of the Sigma which has been upgraded negating the one major negative the review mentioned.

As far as I am aware the Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro performs as well as any of the lenses in the TechRadar test and it is not even included.
