I didn't even know my camera had highlight metering. Jeesh i better get with the program!

More properly it's called "Hightlight Protected Metering" and, as the name implies, it exposes for the highlights. This often leaves the rest of your shot looking under-exposed but that corrects easily in post and your highlights remain UN-blown out. w00t! While not infallible I'd wager it nails the exposure perfectly +90% of the time and the other 10% of the time, it's damn close.

It's my favorite metering mode on my D750.

Correction.

Just checked and not sure the 7200 has Highlight metering. The D750 and D810 certainly do.

So you might be with the program.
