Yes - it is better (generally, produces slightly sharper photos across it's range and COVERS full frame sensor cameras, whereas 55-300 does not) but lacks those 15mm (not that "wide" as 55-300). If we are talking about this lens: Nikon 55-300mm VR

If you own a DX camera and have no intention to switch for a full frame, I suggest you to go for a 55-300mm, anyway...

Either one you buy, you wont regret it - both are relatively affordable, good zoom lenses for the "general purposes". The main difference is that, I repeat, the 70-300mm covers a full frame too (not just a DX), whereas the 55-300mm does not cover ff (only a DX sensor, but can be used on a full frame bodies in a so-called "DX crop mode").
