Lawrence's 365 for 2014

Another earlyish post from me.
This time inspired by a Youtube video (referred by someone here on one of the posts) I made a note of where the pro held his light for portrait shots using a crappy camera (pro camera test) to get the best shot.
Okay so I don't have anyone to test this on except this strange looking Chinese mask on the wall. It has a really long nose and is supposed to be the "god of happiness" or something but I suspect in western culture he would be the "god of fibs".
Even Pinnochio's nose is put to shame by this fellow.
So some 20 or so photos later - most of which produced really horrible shadows - I present my best of the bunch.

Oh and it was fun as there was only really one place to hang him with no background or side distractions. This meant setting my tripod up on the kitchen counter and using a stepladder to focus. Included in the process was the use of my remote shutter release (highly recommend everyone gets one of these) and my old Sunpak flash.
And I think I will now go out and try and capture a bird or something else exciting.

Just to stay in …
Forgot that I hadn't done anything until a few moments ago and am in the middle of a movie.
Snapped the fire.
Please don't like - as it is not worth it. I know and I am ok with that for tonight.

I was determined to not leave things to the last minute today so went for a walk with the dogs that I am caring for.

Found these ducks sitting calmly for me - only problem was the angle of the sun so I had to be patient for a shot when the eyes would be clear. Nothing great but at least it was a session of "thinking" photography.

And then on the return trip this horse was neatly framed by the conifers and looked like it had potential but it turned out a bit bleh ...

Two photos for today - the first (of the seagull) was taken today the second is an older photo (taken January 1st) which I revisited to do some processing on. At the time of taking it I had no idea of how to bring out some of the finer detail.

I just tried my first Milkyway. Interesting exercise with the wrong lens and trial and error.
My widest lens is the 18-105 or the 18 -55. This was with the former but I might try the shorter lens next time.
I had to guess everything and the result is the stars had moved. I had no idea they moved that much in such a short space of time.
Note to self: Set all lenses back to AM and VR on
Here it is - just for fun.

A good reason to get fast glass!

Not too shabby for a 1st attempt. I need to travel for miles to get a good night sky without city lights.

Normally one has to travel but I am very fortunate I am currently perched atop a hill overlooking a small town. This was shot from the deck on impulse after seeing a few milky way photos on FaceBook. I really wish I had a wide angle right now.
I could go a few miles out of town and probably get an even better shot (i.e. less lights)

I think it is an Iris. Not sure why I am doing all these flower shots when I have such stunning views but ….
have you ever noticed that some stunning views come out "flat" as photos (or is that just my lack of skill)?

I was going to leave the background foliage out but in the end I decided I like it.

Not an iris Lawrence, some sort of lily maybe.

Funny but I tried a milky way shot tonight. I read that to avoid visible star movement you need to keep your shot 30sec or less. If you want trails then longer than 30sec. I have to say my attempt was a failure also. The outside light was on and I was feeling too lazy to walk up and turn it off (I was down the hill a bit)

An Arum lily I believe Vixen. Sometimes things you know just don't come to mind at the right time!!! Age?

The good thing about experimenting is you cannot ever fail - you simply get a result. It's not always the result you were hoping for but so what?

I took some photos of a lawn mower and posted them on another thread but didn't want to use them for my 365. Hence I decided to try something - trouble is I was doing a couple of things at once which is never a good thing if you want to do one well.

So here is the result of the experiment which I will revisit at a future date and devote my entire concentration to it! :D

Another day with very little mojo and a missing "eye". A bit disappointing really but that's life.
I took about 30 photos and they were all below average. :(
