Last Week

I spent the last week with my wife, children, brother and Mom and Dad at their house in Central Florida.

While I was there, I visited Colonial Photo & Hobby in Orlando to pick up some photo related items. While there, I saw a rubber band-driven propeller balsa airplane, which I purchased to take home to my dad. I remember my dad loving to fly any type of toy airplane, from this type, to sling-launched, to electric engine powered, so it was a no-brainer.

Yesterday, my mother asked if we knew where he was, and when he didn't answer within the house, I peeked my head out the front door and found him doing this!



Watching him fly it was priceless.

I don't even know how much it cost, but it was worth every penny!!! (I put down a ten-spot for it and a rubber band launched plane, and got change back...)

I remember a local model airplane club holding a contest for a build your own rubber band powered airplane, with prizes for things like the heaviest to fly (at least 20 seconds) and longest flight. Someone managed to work out a small, incredibly light plane with a throttle on the rubber band that managed to fly for something like 4 minutes. It was way the heck up in the rafters of the gym, launched from the top of the bleachers. I was too young at the time to understand what they heck made it work like that and every time I see one of these I think about it.

Reminds me of those foamy colored ones, though I don't recall if those came with or were user-propelled.
