Laptop vs. Desktop - Your Preference

i only have 4gb of memory right now...figured 16 was a nice round number! What do you think I should do? 8 gb?

6 or 8 GB is generally enough, I think you'd notice very little improvement after 8 GB for day to day use and post-processing.

I do all CPU intensive work on my Desktop - Dual Xeon 4 cores, and three monitors. The laptop is an ultralight for the road only.

Both. HP desktop with 12GB of RAM for most editing and printing and a 17 inch laptop with 8GB RAM for tethered shooting and travel. Same editing software loaded on both.

I'm extremely limited in knowledge and experience when it come to this topic. But thanks to Blacktop I have a laptop and I'm hoping to get a 2TG external hard drive by next month! :)
The laptop has only a small amount of ram memory, but so far it's working well for me for now! :)
Later(likely much later) I'll get a new laptop with much more ram memory, and maybe add a couple more external hard drives to what I have by then! :D

Laptops just don't cut it -

But I think I need two more screens, then I could turn them all portrait and have complete FOV.

And yes I have a laptop (or two) and a tablet (one android, one playbook and one iPad).

and it is a DIY home built 'rig'.

FYI - 32gb RAM with HD7970 graphics card with 3gb v-ram.
2 SSD's & 2 internal HD (2T + 3T) + 2 external HD.

If the speed is fine with you, there is no point in spending money, then hang on to this laptop. Most of the laptops of at least two generations old are fast enough. If it is very slow that is another matter.

If the existing laptop can accommodate more RAM and you are happy with its speeds, then just add more RAM.

When getting external hard disks, get the 1TB USB3 versions. They are selling for around $100, and are the most VFM for the storage space.

Isnt there a limit to how much ram different windows versions will recognize

Yes.

. 32 bit OS will recognize only 4GB
. 64 bit OS will recognize beyond that

What is more important is the Motherboard. There are two limitation
. Physical limitation is the number of slots and the maximum DIMM size. If you have 2 slots and each can support only 4GB, then you max out at 8GB. If each can take 8GB DIMM then you have 16GB. On the other hand some older ones cannot go beyond 2GB DIMM, here you max out at 4GB.
. Logical limitation is when the motherboard does not support beyond a certain size, even though it may be physically possible. My XEON MB has 16 slots, but supports only upto 4GB DIMM, so I am stuck at 64GB max. Some support bigger capacities, so could have 128GB with 8GB DIMMS or 256GB with 16GB DIMMS.

Desktop MB are flexible, while most laptop MB are not. Some support 4GB, some 8GB and a few beyond 16GB.

I don't actually have the cash for a hard drive, but just some credit at gettingtons. So THIS HARD DRIVE is the one I'm going to try to get. I'd love to know what you guys think of it. :)

I have Windows 7 32 bit and 10GB (2 4GB and 2 1GB) of RAM without any problems. I was astonished how much quicker my desktop ran when I went from 4-10 GB

I use to prefer desktops but not anymore, in fact I don't even own one now and haven't in a long time. I have a 15" Macbook Pro and a 11" Macbook Air. I use the Macbook Air more now due it be lighter for one thing. I don't sit at a desk much either because when I do, my right shoulder shakes uncontrollably so I tend to sit in my recliner.

I usually travel with the MacBook Air just because it's lighter (this is what I took on vacation last week), but if I'm planning to do more work off camera I'll travel with the MacBook Pro for the larger screen and more CPU/Memory.
