Best guess on camera angle, if you're looking at a fisheye shot, is to look dead center in the frame and see where that stands in relationship to what you'd believe to be eye level. In this case I'm aimed down from the landing towards the back of the lower floor (eye level is where you can no longer see the tops of the steps). My goal was to capture the entire stairway as well as give a feel for what's above and beneath it, so I just panned down a touch.

Fisheye shots benefit a lot from minor movements, up & down, and also closer and farther away. This one has a nearly 180 degree view along the diagonal, so where precisely you put the corners can change a lot in the photo.

You've piqued my interest enough making me want to try my 14mm on a set of stairs. Just gotta think where I can find a similar set of stairs as I love the perspective on yours. Hmm...then I wonder if the distort option in PCC 2014 will yield similar results to your non-circular fisheye lens.

The 14mm end of your 14-24mm gives a reported 114 degrees of view, as opposed to the 180 degrees on the Sigma fisheye. Now, with yours it's left to right, not on the diagonal, because the lens elements straighten the pincushion distortion - for the most part at least. Lightroom allows me to do the same type of correction on the 15mm, so here's something that's likely close to what you'll see from the 14-24mm (from the unedited RAW)...

Very different, obviously. Sort of proud that I had that one angle down the stairs nailed. LOL

I used to hate fisheye lenses, but as I've learned where and where not to use them I've developed a great fondness for them. Not love, but genuine like. I prefer the ultrawide look 90% of the time, but sometimes nothing else works.

Thanks for posting this, Jake! It certainly does look a lot different and gives me an idea of how much extra room I'd need to account for on the sides. My lens is a prime, but Nikon's web site still lists it as 114° field of view. I really like the view of your fisheye although I don't think I'd use one enough to justify getting one.

D750 really bringing it! Will she be bumping gear out of your bag @BackdoorHippie ?

It won't be bumping anything that wasn't bumped for me to pick it up. I bumped the D800 for a second D600 and a D7100 because the files are just too big for me. Then my D600's became D610's thanks to the shutter issue, and about the time the second was replaced the D750 was announced, so I sold the replacement D610 at a $500 profit over what I'd paid for the used D600 and then rolled that and some cash into the D750.

It's easily my #1 camera for everything that doesn't need DX reach. The only thing I miss is the grip, and I'm debating on going Nikon or waiting for the 3rd party stuff to eventually make it out here.

When you have a chance, think you can update your signature and the camera body info in your profile? I can't keep up with all your gear changes so I look there to see what you still use! :wink-new:

Do you notice a big difference in quality of photos between the D750 vs. the D610? Your cameras must be good because they take beautiful photos. :tongue-new: Lol! ;)

I've thought about it, but it's too much trouble. LOL Besides, there's still stuff queued up to process that may include some of that gear. ;)

Big difference? No. Difference? Yes. The focus system is, without a doubt, an improvement and I do feel I'm getting sharper photos than ever. That's not to say that in an all things being equal studio environment you'd be able to tell the difference.

I've been way too busty to do a real, clinical test comparing the two - some sort of double blind experiment where I have two photos taken with identical settings in a controlled environment with little to no adjustments in post. At this point there are too many factors involved unless I do it in ViewNX2, which I'd rather just delete off the computer. I do not believe that anyone with a D610 who has not been saying, "I like this camera, but I don't love it because I wish it...", should consider upgrading unless they just have money lying around. But, if anyone is planning on making the move to an FX camera I would say that they'll be better served paying the extra 35% for the D750 over the repriced D610.

Simply stunning photos. Those images are so damn clean... almost makes me wish I had hung on to get this instead of the 800

Thanks, Tracey. The D800 is certainly capable of these kinds of photos. I've spent a lot of time learning just how to get what I need out of an image in post without extending the noise. That said, there's something about 36MP's that, for me at least, complicates things in post. Going from something that big to 1000px on the long side for sites like this requires extra work and I wound up deciding to stick with 24MP's instead.
