We've been toying with the idea of putting a feeder up in the back yard, but have hesitated due to the volume of squirrels already coming into the yard, and the nocturnal "pets" that we've seen walking the fence. Still, if I could get that somewhere accessible by birds without attracting more four legged creatures, that might be a bonus!
Have you thought about setting up the camera on a tripod and using a remote to take the shot? That way the birds are less likely to be spooked and you can get even closer.
Oh yea, these are all on tripod and using my pocket wizards for shutter release. Just been slowly getting them used to the camera and been trying to figure out their normal fly by path, which the later is all over the place. This is the first year to successfully attract them so just being a little careful. Currently I am around 5-6 feet, so next time I plan to cut the distance in half and change the angle to get better light or might even try to add a flash.
Awesome! I wonder if there's a way to set it up in front of the feeder so you can get a face on shot of them.
Funny you mention that, I was thinking that this morning. I was also thinking just slightly below the feeder, so need to play with it.
Looking good Kevin! I was checking out a friend's feeder last weekend and got some ideas of my own that should provide some flexibility on camera angles.
Both he and you have the feeder mounted close to the house. Do you know if the hummingbirds would be more/less skittish if the feeder was hung in an open area rather than closer to the wall?
